A digital-art collection grid of floating, irregular panels, each containing a distinct, boldly colored character illustration: a plant-based guardian with glowing leaves, a clockwork animal with transparent gears, a plush toy monster stitched with visible seams, and an ethereal, translucent spirit. All figures are clearly non-human yet expressive through posture and design. The panels hover over a dark, textured backdrop reminiscent of ink-washed paper, with scattered neon shapes and paint splashes. Soft spotlight-style lighting subtly illuminates each panel, giving a curated gallery feel. Shot straight-on with slight perspective, the layout reads like an interactive portfolio gallery page, energetic but organized, highlighting variety in character design and narrative tone.

Meet Freya

Bold characters, tangled feelings, and tiny visual jokes—peek behind the curtain of my illustration process.

About

I’m Freya Axten, an illustrator building bold, slightly feral characters and the strange worlds they call home, blending y2k sparkle with modern storytelling to create images that feel playful, personal, and a little haunted.

A whimsical digital-art cityscape built entirely from character silhouettes and narrative symbols, where buildings resemble stacked storybooks and stylized masks, and streets curl like the pages of a comic. In the foreground, a prominent non-human mascot figure made of bright geometric shapes presents a floating gallery of framed illustration thumbnails, each glowing slightly. The sky is a gradient from warm coral to electric blue, dotted with oversized, friendly stars and graphic speech-bubble clouds. Dynamic rim lighting creates striking outlines and dramatic contrast. Viewed from a low-angle, cinematic perspective, the composition feels expansive and adventurous, ideal for a ‘world-building’ portfolio section cover, emphasizing bold storytelling and imaginative environments.
A narrative digital-art scene of a floating island studio set within a vast, starry void, where easels, canvases, and a glowing drawing tablet orbit slowly around a central, abstract figure made of swirling brushstrokes and color blobs. Along the edges of the island, small diorama-style worlds showcase tiny, non-human characters enacting different scenes: a market in the clouds, a forest of living books, a luminous underwater cavern. Cool, cosmic blues contrast with intense oranges and pinks, lit by soft, magical rim light and scattered starlight, creating vivid highlights. Captured from a bird’s-eye, slightly tilted angle, the composition feels adventurous and bold, perfect for a ‘projects’ overview or ‘worlds’ section visual.

Process, Tools & Features

I sketch digitally in Procreate and Photoshop, then layer neon lines, textured brushes, and typography nods to y2k ephemera; my work has appeared in indie zines, music visuals, and campaigns seeking character-driven, emotionally weird storytelling.
